General information
The PRV grant 95% of all patents in 36 months, and 90% in 24 months. Improvements in administration, organisation and quality systems at the PRV have led to improved productivity. Recently there has been a decline in the number of patents filed for telecommunications, IT and all areas of technology. In 2004, 3,230 national patent applications were filed. The Swedish government supports the move to make community patents available as discussed in the London Protocol.

Swedish patent applications must be filed in Swedish at the PRV. If the application is not in Swedish a translation should be furnished. However other documents, other than the description, patent claims or abstract, may be filed in Swedish, Danish or Norwegian.

To obtain a novelty search (as described under Section 9 of the Patent Act) the applicant must request the search and pay the fee within 3 months of the date of filing the application. A translation of the search request should be provided for applications not submitted in Swedish. A granted patent has exclusive protection for 20 years from the filing date if the patent holder allows the PRV to publish the complete description in Svensk Patenttidning (Swedish Patent Gazette, which is free on the Internet).
