General information on patents in the UK and Ireland
In 2002 a total of 29,911 patent applications were made
in the UK, 13,562 were published and 8,690 were granted. The majority
of applications came from the US, Japan, Taiwan and Germany. The
greatest numbers were for the telecommunications sector as well
as civil engineering/building, machine elements, measuring/testing,
transporting, conveying and calculating.
Figures were similar in 2004 with 28,223 patents applications being made and a staggering 10,541 being granted. Some of the main companies filing patent applications in the UK are NEC, Motorola, Samsung, Bosch, IBM, Hewlett Packard, Visteon Global Technologies and Schlumber.
It is strongly advisable to search the databases
for existing patents before investing in Research and Development.
According to the Patent Office, “Companies in Europe could be wasting
20 billion euros every year repeating R & D work”. Peter Slater,
assistant director of the Search and Advisory Service at the UK
Patent Office says, “There are 40 million patents published around
the world, which can be accessed via the Patent Office database.”
One popular and unique offer from the Irish Patent
Office is a short term 10 year patent. Of the 845 national applications
filed in Ireland in 2004, 52% of applications opted for the shorter
term. This trend is visible in past years also. A total of 26,445
applicants of EP patents designated Ireland. The main categories
of national applications include human necessities, chemistry/metallurgy
and performing operations.
